There are active defense measures in place for nuclear missiles. Now how successful they would be? No idea.

Yeahhh best they're gonna do is make the nukes detonate in the sky... I really don't see that going over well... infact I would imagine it would make for even worse fallout.

Fallout can be mitigated. Direct detonation in a big city cannot.
