Well, this guy was no idiot based on his resume. He had an assault-style rifle and used his doorbell camera to wait for the FBI agents to enter the door, so it wouldn't have been too hard to pull off.
No offense, but I am assuming that you read this somewhere or saw it on the news? Either way, I do not personally buy anything from the media.
They had at the very least 5 FBI Agents and a SWAT Team on stand by along with a large number of cops. If they knew he was so dangerous then why not send in the heavily fortified SWAT rather than some suits?
Not all bulletproof vests are created equal and indeed "vests" are often more suited to smaller arms like handguns. Unless they were wearing plates in a carrier rig.
M855 will punch through soft armor like nothing and can defeat lower level hard armor. Could also have hit them in the throat (no coverage) or low gut shots.
