Real simple way to figure it out is to call and see if they have availability on those dates.

If not, then the price hike was probably an automatic increase based on increased demand. If there is plenty of availability, then it's likely a signal.

Hotels raise prices due to demand. They have to have staff on hand to service the number of guests. Staffing is the largest expense any company pays.
