For anyone who served in our military ... is this a usual thing to do or not?

Not at all. It's been said above - only on entrance, re-enlistments, or whatever they call it for officers re-upping. Maybe on certain officer promotions, certainly for something like becoming a member of the JCS.

I said mine at enlistment, and 2 more re-enlistments.
