As a vegetarian for 45 years (profound Buddhist life experience) I look at vegans as radical cultists that have forgotten the Middle Way and practice extreme asceticism without a valid goal. They end up harming themselves and are deluded that they are doing something good.. As they deteriorate, it is terrible to see, but difficult to deprogram.. They have to be shown...
Well, they don't have to scare the animals since they are being slaughtered mercilessly-the "humane" methods are still life ending. I have a quote from my Teacher: "If you want to know the causes of war, go to any slaughterhouse at midnight".. The growth hormones can trigger cancers and the adrenaline has its effects- not to mention the antibiotics that can make diseases into super bugs.
By not participating in the slaughter with every purchase of meat, your spirit is clearer and by having a balance of proteins from beans and rice and other nutrients from veggies reduces the hunger for animal proteins.
The resources consumed by the meat industry is phenomenal and the book "Diet for a New America" is packed with statistics that will help understand..
I would recommend going vegetarian first-too extreme of a change with no real neat gain... I have no issues with eating at restaurants with meat eating friends-their choice, my choice- I get invited to family dinners and my niece always accommodates my life choices. I too find extremists a real PITA...
