If the crew weren't in on it I think the explanation provide by the link in this post is very unlikely. I don't know anything about sailing, but even if the computer was controlling the navigation I would be very surprised if someone wasn't constantly watching it, especially in that crowded location. And if they were watching it and determined someone else was controlling the navigation what would they do? I know what I'd do, kill the engines and drop the anchor.
