I started reading an old pharmacology book back in the early seventies. It said most likely hygiene was responsible for the dramatic decrease in disease, and they weren't sure if drugs had anything to do with it.

And the Old Testament Leviticus laws people mock as ignorant ensure hygiene is taken care of. Feces are to be buried outside of camp. Hand washing before eating is a requirement. Etc.
