The entire concept of a more deadly variant is so unlikely as to be laughable. While viral mutants are not uncommon, gain of function mutants are incredibly rare (thousands or millions of years you might see one in a particular strain).
Because people don't know that though, they can use it as a scare tactic easily. If there is another, more deadly or more contagious variant (HUGE IF) it was almost certainly designed in a lab (just like the first one probably was).
The most likely scenario is though, it is just a minor change that causes it to be LESS virulent, or no discernable change (if there is any variation AT ALL).
