Most doctors don't belong. It's kind of like your high school student government. Most students don't really care, but they all have to live with it. Except for the big difference that the AMA is the largest (I believe it's #1, but maybe it's "one of") lobbying org in the country, and has their claws into anything medical. Most doctors think of them like most citizens think of the IRS, from what I gather.
Is it possible to be a doctor without joining the AMA?
I'm going to ask if my doc belongs, and ask him why he supports a racist group if he does.

I've never joined the AMA.
They have NEVER worked for doctors' benefit.
They make money out of licensing CPT (procedure) codes. They used to make money by selling doctors' information to advertisers, etc.
Same... they are a useless entity.
