Rickover wrote voluminously, including on management. “Get middle managers from the shop floor.”
Rickover on ‘Responsibility, it is an unique concept …’ hung in my briefing room.
In my day, NNPS passed only the finest (as a filter). A Goose Creek NPS instructior likened it now to a mud-pump. If a mud-man gets near the suction then he will be qualified, a burden to the fleet. Otherwise we are discriminating racists.
There were no 13%-er operators on my ship and none that I recall on the ships that I tested.
Responsibility, it is an unique concept. You may share it with others, but your portion is not diminished. You may delegate it, but it is still with you. If responsibility is rightfully yours, no evasion, or ignorance or passing the blame can shift the burden to someone else. Unless you can point your finger at the man who is responsible when something goes wrong, then you have never had anyone really responsible.
The “it is an unique concept” is essential. Rickover was a pedant at grammar too.
In defense of grrrls. During my career three women from my facility attempted our Test Engineering prep school at Electric Boat, Groton. Two passed. The third had the “highest scores ever” coming into the final exam. She was too sick with anxiety to sit the exam (100 essay questions graded on key words and tricky phrases, show all calculation work). I ruined an expensive dress shirt with sweat rings down to my skivvies.
Dropped out of college, enlisted, refused brown water Navy for being too smart. ASVAB ‘66 GCT=74 equivalent to IQ=160 Triple None Society.
EAOS to IBEW apprenticeship for job security. Journeyman-Leadingman for only electrician with nuclear instrument and controls experience. Seconded to Test Engineering about 1981, qualified in a year and retired with BRAC3 1995.
Thank you for your story. Wow. You are what we called a self made man. God bless you. This kind of work for what you want is missing now...according to observation and the news. I know many who worked their way out of difficult circumstances but we never hear these stories.
Now if only the right people would read and apply this. They would immediately stop at the first white privilege reference. How about creating a version leaving out all of the white privilege references until the very end to make your point. Oh that's right they never bothered to learn to read either.
I am white and recently got a mammogram and a young black woman was getting more info and insurance, etc. She asked if I was Hispanic. I replied no and then she said "Oh, then you're American". THAT was a head scratcher! This race/gender thing is out of control. I suffer from the same white privilege as you. At 12, I babysat 6 kids for a quarter an hour and that was a good job!
For several years as the diversity and inclusion narrative unfolded, I had this gut feeling that the Big Tech companies pushing it has it all backwards. I had no idea how to point it out until I had my Great Awakening. I remember asking some people who were not white, "have you ever had a position due to your skin color or gender?"
They ALWAYS reply with, "No! I earned EVERYTHING that I got. "
Them later in the conversation, "how did I get selected for this specific opportunity?"
I just shrug and share my uncertainty.
Now that I look back, it always makes me wonder about many applications to jobs, schools, etc. The four that will be asked is usually: ethnicity, gender, veteran status, and disability.
I've usually replied for all four, but now I just reply with gender and veteran status.
Ouch. Those wonderful companions should know better than to bite like that. They must not have passed their critical race classes.
Though if they only but white boys they clearly passed.
Why on earth would anyone hunt fox. They are just in the woods waiting to catch rats looking for chickens. That dog I spoke with about foxes going after chickens lied & only knew white owners, so he was misguided.
Thank you for the laugh sir & thank you for your service!
Love it. My WHITE PRIVILEGE 18 year old son stated, "so you can basically replace the term WHITE PRIVILEGE with "HARD WORK" and the essay would make perfect sense." lolol
This is to date the most racist shit I have heard! What, with all your strong work ethics, patriotism, and strong family values. It’s a wonder you can look yourself in the mirror every day. You probably passed this freedom and core values to your children as well. I’m also assuming you have beautiful god fearing grandchild. The vanity! :)
Amazing read fren. I grew up partly in Johnstown Pa.
Giant Eagle! Man that takes me back. God bless you and yours :)
Thank you for your service, Fren! I too have worked my whole life for my "white privilege." Everything is better when you earn it.
Thank you for your service. USN SS ‘69 - ‘75. Retired NNP nuke (class of 70-2) and civilian DoN engineer 1995 BRAC3
I do not believe that Admiral Rickover was a mere asshole, he just would not tolerate fools. We need many Rickovers now. Read Rickover on management.
