When I was in school, we sang songs like "Old Black Joe," "Uncle Ned," and "Massa's In De Cold, Cold Ground."
"I wish I was in de land ob cotton, old times dar are not forgotten."
BTW, the smallpox vaccine was not a "shot in the arm," it was an inoculation by scratching the skin.
I'd have crapped a brick if they let us sing Dixie back in school
You didn't live back in the good old days. We sang the songs in dialect exactly as written. The song book we used was the same one my mother used when she was in school in the 30s and early 40s. I have her copy in my vast library.
Yeah I didn't live back in the good old days, you could say that again :/.
