Project Gutenberg has thousands of books for free download in your favorite formats. Archive.org has millions of items. There are also a number of Usenet newsgroups that have books you can download, although the main poster was arrested a few years ago. I prefer paper books, and I have a huge library. But I can't afford to buy all the ones I want. So I download all I can.
A cheap 7" Fire tablet, 128GB microSD cards, and a small solar setup eliminates the power worries. I bought my tablet on a Thanksgiving sale for $29.99. Amazing price for what you get.
