Every printer sold encodes its own serial number in the images/documents that it prints. That way if you print & mail a threatening letter (or whatever) the authorities can analyze the text under a microscope and see which printer printed that letter. If you "registered" your printer with the manufacturer, the manufacturer will just give the authorities your information. If you didn't register, the authorities will track it down to the specific store and transaction where that printer was found, and they may get your credit card information.
and the cartridge bleeds all the ink out into the tray. then if they decide not to make a cartridge anymore they'll force update all the printers to no longer work so you cant even inject them yourself anymore.
If you really want a printer that's cost effective, get a printer that uses toner instead of ink. The ink always dries up and causes problems. But toner is just a powder that gets heated up when needed, so it lasts way longer with fewer issues. At least that's been my experience.
Even high-end offset lithography leaves evidence that can identify the printer. If they know how it was printed, they can narrow it down. Just like police have all paint samples for cars to identify make/model in hit and runs, they have ink samples too. They can trace the ink, paper stock, printing press type. Printing presses are hard to hide.
All office and home printers from inkjet to laser printers insert a code that forensics can identify. Take a magnifying glass and look closely at the dots, you'll see it.

A counterfeiter couldn't simply photocopy the ballots, the security would likely print "copy" on the copied one. You've probably seen this when you copy an official document.
So they have to be laser printed or commercially printed. We know some of the fake ballots were printed in China. I'm not sure but maybe the official ballots were printed using phosphorescent in the ink, that shows up under blacklight (we saw that inspection in the audit). The Chinese and laser printed ballots wouldn't use this.
Also, where did they get the files to print the ballots? It's possible for a good typesetter to reproduce anything to look similar. But more likely the files were provided. If somebody in government provided those files to China to reproduce ballots, that's treason isn't it?

These could be printed on different paper that has different encoding, all dropped off in random places, or mailed to the wrong address. It gives them the ammunition they need to cheat, while providing a very easy way to track which votes are real and which aren't.
You would also have a count of ACTUAL real mailed ballots, and fake bait ballots so once you go over the number of real ballots mailed in, you know you are into fake ballots at that point.
We all knew mail in voting would be rife with cheating, zero way the Trump admin didn't plan on this and try to get ahead of it in some way. It would be as simple as switch out the paper stock to run the bait ballots on, so very few people would know about it.
