It's unfortunate they end up in the ocean and other places. But they do need to be discarded frequently. In a hospital setting, they are to be discarded after every interaction (and even treated as biohazard).

If you have to wear one every day all day then I think at the very least you should change it every hour. If you use cotton ones, you should still change them periodically thoughout the day then wash them.
