This is what I tried and you guys let me know what you think. I took a grapefruit and peeled the outer layer (orange skin) leaving as much of the white peel as possible. I then cut it in small pieces and blended it with one cup of water. Once it cools in the refrigerator it will become thick. I store it in the refrigerator. I use 1/4 per day and mix it in a glass of water. You can definitely taste the bitter in the peel. It has the exact same bitter as tonic water. I take this with my zinc and other vitamins. If you try it let me know what you think. I find this an easy way vs boiling the peels. I would think it is better than boiling the peels because wouldn’t that destroy the quinine? Plus this is so much faster to make.

My understanding is the amount of grapefruit juice you would have to drink is much more than 1/4 grapefruit to cause drug interactions, but check with your doctor if you have any doubts. This seems to be working really well for me. But every individual is different.
Are you a doctor?
I’m not going to answer that but here is more information. Check with your doctor to see how much you can take. Here is more information.

Thank you for sharing your outside perspective. Every now and then, people who know nothing about a subject can still come to the table with something useful. I’m not certain this is one of those times but thanks for sharing.
Don’t assume what I know or don’t know or if it’s an outside perspective or not. If you don’t agree that is fine.
Thank you for sharing.
You use 1/4 what per day? And when you simmer the peels, the quinine is released in the steam which is why you don't lift the lid until it cools. Maybe your way is a good alternative...I don't know.
Hmm that is interesting. I may try it both ways.
Yes I drink 1/4 per day so one grapefruit last 4 days.
A quarter of what, you give no measurements, are you using the whole grapefruit? How much water in the mixture etc.
Yes 1/4 of a whole grapefruit. So one grapefruit last me 4 days. Then I make another one. When I make it I use one cup of water to blend it. But when you get the concentrate you can mix it in the amount of water you like.
ok thank you so much.
I wanted a natural source of quinine. This is really helping me with inflammation. Plus I think it is a natural source of vitamin c.
I wanted a natural source of quinine for prophylaxis for antiviral protection with flu season coming. I don’t was to take a pill of HCQ. Plus I like the fiber the peel provides and the anti-inflammatory benefits of quinine.
Yes, op, boiling will damage the tonic. A low warmth (blender heat) to release the oils and cold to preserve it.... Looking forward to trying this...
From what I remember, it was that you simmer (don't boil!) the peels in a covered pot for two hours. Do not remove the cover or quinine will escape in the vapor. Instead, let the pot sit covered until it has cooled.
Yes, do not boil. I never take any of my extractions above 130 degrees as sterilization begins at that point, and you will lose most of the good or delicate properties in the boil off. Keeping the lid on until room temp traps them back into the liquid.
I bet an instant pot or slow cooker would be ideal for cooking the peels.
Yes! I do oil extraction with a crock pot all the time...low & slow gives the best quality..
How do you extract the oil?
I use commercial equipment for extractions. I should have used the proper term infusion. To infuse, you don't need anything more than a crockpot. In this case take the peels, line the bottom of the crockpot, add approximately half cup or full cup of food grade oil to cover them. Cook on low for 2-4 hrs. Turn off and allow to rest for 24 hours. Strain and bottle. Use an oil that has high heat properties such coconut or sunflower. You can use others, but these tend to hold up longer. Ratio for most infusions are 1:1 Hope that helps. Coconut oil will make a firm infusion, paste like. Sunflower oil will have fluid bottle ability.
Wow going to try it. Thanks so much.
I use dr zelenkos vitamins and supplement it with extra D and a regular multi.
Does it contain quinine or similar compounds? You will get a lot of nice flavinoids out of that rind but I thought the only verifiable source for quinine is cinchona bark. 0
Lots of articles say this is a natural source of quinine. Most people boil the peels, but to me this is faster.
