It seems to me that many cases of legal guardianship are just another version of slavery with slick legal words and obfuscating bureaucracy and paperwork that ensure nobody learns to describe it by its real name.
I'm an attorney and I deal with Guardianships frequently. 99% of Guardianships are legitimate - a person lacks capacity to make medical and financial decisions for themselves. Think Alzheimer's, dementia, stroke, etc. In those cases, you need someone (family or otherwise) to step in.
