Yeah I never bought the idea that it was "cheap" labor. I think what they wanted was "slave" labor that they could mistreat and abuse, but couldn't run away. The problem is local citizens can sue you and might question what's actually going on in your factories.
Weird side note: We had a VP that was a really good guy. He fought back on the whole idea of buying from China. He had a brilliant young lady do a huge study, detailing the costs associated with the entire supply chain. He proved, with actual data, that is was not a savings. In fact, would cost us more. The leadership team then said it would improve when we reached further up the economies of scale curve, and we proceeded. It was pathetic. Has nothing to do with anything, just thought I'd throw that out there. :-)
