For me I will be running an email client and at least 2 different browsers with 3-6 sites open. Only when I maximize and switch the screen to GAW then the CPU fires up. If I minimize it calms right down. ONLY GAW .... no other sites do this and I browse a lot;)
I have a question for dudes suffering slowdown on this site.
Are you running a dark mode or night mode extension on Firefox or possibly other browsers? I have noticed, initially on a raspberry pi, that the extension "Dark reader" just does not play nice with this site and needs to be set to whitelist GA otherwise memory and CPU gets fucky.
On a 3B+ it would eat up the entire Gig of RAM and lock up the device with only 1 browser tab open it was that bad. On a 4B with 8 gig of ram it would slow down DRAMATICALLY but not seem to go beyond 800meg usage. It seems to hate sites that are already darkened and the low resources of the PI made it hard to miss this problem. FYI.
Have noticed system periodically becomes unresponsive, only on gaw, and only sometimes. On linux. Suspect some posts may contain scripting or more likely some linked pages. An interesting sytemmatic approach to troubleshooting this would be to write a script that visits each post’s comments and link, comparing a resources snapshot after each. Another simpler experiment would be simply disabling scripts and other privileges until the problem goes away.
Might be that the actual page is huge compared to a normal site, I've been on and off archiving content, and it always seems like GA pages take nearly a quarter GB by themselves, vs a few MB for other websites
I'll be interested in reading your updates. I'm mobile-only, so I do not notice the same issue.
I have been noticing the same thing here for at least the last 3-4 weeks. And I am running unix!
Have you measured CPU usage with Community styling disabled?
Settings > Community Styling > Off > Save
Is community styling a known resource hog?

This site adds virtually no additional drawdown to my cpu or mem usage.
Firefox - Express VPN - extension: Adblocker Ultimate
Intel Core i9-9900K Coffee Lake 8-Core 3.6GHz
GeForce RTX 2080 Ti 11GB GDDR6
Just checked:
Any other browser tab selected = 1-3% CPU usage, low power usage.
GAW tab selected = 17-18% CPU usage, VERY HIGH power usage.
This site also loads pictures very slowly.
That happens when people post 13Mb phone pics from their superfantastic new phones at quadHD - of a road sign or marmot (or whatnot)

I tried this myself, only seeing about 5% cpu use increase....so it's possible. Using updated chrome to test (work computer)
Maybe try noscript browser add-on and see if cpu use continues?
Just tested on my pc and saw no detectable cpu usage increase. Brave browser
Ghost do you have only the site open? IT also 22 years
My iPad seems fine better here then ever where else
