Just restarted my laptop with an 'ooh, some updates pending' option. And what do I find under 'Services' on the restart? A new 'AppReadiness' exe, as well as updated ME tabs. Killed that fucker straight off and now going to go laser-blast any new traces of ME.

WHAT KNOCKERS!
I love Linux Mint! You even get the full Office suite for free and all the other free goodies! You won't have to worry about some supposed Microsoft guy taking over your computer and telling you it's been hacked and you need to reinstall the O/S for $200!
At this point I wouldn't be using any Windows version above 7. Security patches be damned. If you're still holding onto it for games, give Linux a go. Steam's Proton works surprisingly well for a lot of things and Lutris and other services exist to make third party stuff such as League of Legends etc easy to install and get running.
It's not perfect, but it's good enough that I'm full time now and have no intentions of going back.
I got given my laptop which gets frequent Microsoft updates - wish I knew how to stop them. I've been told they are harmless but doubt they are for my benefit. Wish I wasn't technologically impaired :(
I don't know about harmless. Even if you use scripts to disable all the baked in spyware, with every update Micro$oft re-enables them and you have to go through the scripts again. It's very tedious, and highly suspicious.
Certainly they aren't planting meltdown/spectre (nuclear grade viruses) type stuff in there, but at this point I have no faith or trust in Micro$oft.
Me neither. Can't wait to see Gates go down.
