FWIW they interviewed a prop master on Fox that says they will sometimes have the actors shoot real bullets out of the gun (if an actual working gun) in a safe environment so the actors will be able to 'act the recoil' from shooting a projectile vs a blank. As in arm goes back down etc since opposite force vs just a noise maker. Of course those are locked away immediately and kept off site usually.
