I have some relatives who have reacted similarly to this psyop, viciously attacking formerly beloved family members over absolute nonsense. In some cases, it really does seem like they have turned into brainwashed cult members. They are not the people they were. They can no longer listen, compromise, or reason. They can only shut out any message that threatens their beliefs, attack, and shun.
