It's really "food" that is calorie rich.
If the food you eat contains more than 300-800 calories per pound you will gain weight. If the food you eat contains less than about 500 calories per pound you will lose weight.
Veggies are about 100-150 calories per pound
Fruit is about 300 calories per pound
Bread 920-1350 per pound
Chips, dry cereal things like that about 1500-1800 calories per pound
nuts/seeds 2400-3200 per pound

So how I see it is simple. We are all eating about the same amount of food. That amount is the amount that causes our stomachs to send a signal to our brain that we are full.
Of course some people overeat to a point where they get sick but that is a different problem.
We are eating the same amount of food that people were eating 40-60 years ago. If you look at pictures of people 40-60 years ago most were skinny/fit. Back in the 50s-70s they have plenty of food. Today we have plenty of food.
The processed food we have today is not the same as the food from back then. The food now is highly processed dense calorie low nutrition food.
It's almost not real food. Big food likes it because it stores for longer periods of time.
Like I said if you look at something like public beach photos from back then you would have a hard time finding fat people.

Of course not everybody back then was skinny/fit. Just like now not everybody is overweigh
