I don't believe in mainstream Christianity. I believe in the Bible and the Bible alone.
The primary definition of sin is "transgression of the law" or anomia (ἀνομία).
1 John 3:4
Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
This is translated in Strong's Concordance as "illegality, i.e. violation of law or (genitive case) wickedness:—iniquity, × transgress(-ion of) the law, unrighteousness."

The law is plain and if everybody on this planet wrote the ten commandments on their hearts, we would have true world peace.
"Then you don't have to play games with trying to interpret verses that have gone through dozens, if not hundreds of re-interpretations over the centuries."
The discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls proves the Bible has not changed for thousands of years. Also, it's worth noting an ancient copy of the Book of Enoch was recovered at the same time, a book that was removed from the canon by the Alexandrians, who rewrote the Bible into classical Greek (both Old and New Testaments) and who did change some of the Bible. The Vatican bible and all modern Bibles are based on their translations, by the way. (They forgot to remove the Book of Jude, however, which quotes directly from Enoch).
Thankfully, the original Hebrew Bible (Masoretic text) and New Testament written in Koine Greek (The Textus Receptus) survived thanks to Roman Catholic and Islamic persecution driving the Eastern Orthodox Christians from Istanbul (Constantinople) to as far away as Russia.
What convinces me of the truth of the Bible is prophecy. I took up the challenge from Yahweh as issued in Isaiah 46.
Isaiah 46:9-11
9 Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me,
10 Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:
11 Calling a ravenous bird from the east, the man that executeth my counsel from a far country: yea, I have spoken it, I will also bring it to pass; I have purposed it, I will also do it.
The first 4 commandments given to Moses are how you love God with all your heart, soul, and mind. The last 6 commnandments are how you love your neighbor as yourself.
Do you try to follow all 10 of the commandments, including the 4th commandment to keep the Sabbath day(which is Saturday from sundown to sunset) holy? Or, do you believe the 10 commandments are also esoteric and of no real meaning?
Lots of words, thoughts, ideas and beliefs friend. They're extremely helpful for ORIENTING you in the correct direction (which is "WITHIN") but they all add up to exactly NADA in the grand scheme of things if you continue to ruminate over them.
"The Greatest Commandment" resolves all 700,000+ words and covers all 613 "Thou Shalts" and "Thou shalt nots" in one fell swoop.
Christianity is akin to Bhakti Yoga (love and devotion of the creator), not Jnana Yoga (intellectual pursuit using mind to negate maya duality - neti-neti). If you stick to love, prayer, reverence, devotion you're on the right track. As soon as Christians try to enter the reason/logic realm, it always falls apart, because it doesn't "hold up" as such in the first place. Christianity in particular is not about logic/reason - that's why it's called a "faith".
As such, playing the "interpretation" game is a pointless exercise. You cling to the modern, I prefer the original - and frankly, can't understand why anybody would choose the modern.
The word "sin" originates in ancient archery --- hence "miss the mark". That's the original usage, and I argue, INTENDED usage the majority of the time --- as you probably know, there were 2 dozen words translated to "sin" --- which only convolutes things even further. And even more confusing, some of these words are translated to sin in some places, but translated to something else in others. Untangling it all is an effort in futility.
But I'll give you this, once you "Miss the mark", and slip into the thinking mind, this is when the "Modern Version" of "sinning" indeed begins. It's this ORIGINAL SIN, where the mistaken identity appears as "truth", that then leads to all the "bad behavior" so noted. This is why "Know Thyself" is the core teaching in all advanced spiritual traditions. Because the "self known in the mind/thought" is not truly "thyself".
"Who Am I?" If your answer is a "thought", you have been deceived.
If you think your "mind" is where the truth lies, and that salvation comes from somebody else "out there" and further think your "heart" is some dark, demonic place of deception -- well then -- brick wall between you and I. We're light years apart and have no common ground with which to continue dialoging.
Nonetheless, I wish you all the best on your journey back home.
Why not just declare you're a practictioner of Bhakti Yoga and skip all the steps?
And it looks like you answered my question. You don't believe in the 10 commandments.
My belief system explains the origins of the Nephilim, the remains of their ancient cities and technologies buried by the Great Flood, and their rediscovery in the modern era. The prophecy in the Bible predicted the New World Order and everything happening on the planet right now, especially once the Book of Enoch is brought back into the fold.
There are no "steps". Steps lead to more steps, ad infinitum.
There is only recognizing and Re-Membering the truth - which lies outside the matrix of mind (aka -> hell), within the heart space.
Enjoy your journey my friend.
