They’ve effectively tied their self identity to their politics. They’re caring and smart, and everyone that opposes them is heartless and dumb. Changing their affiliation causes therm to re-evaluate their identity, and most can’t cope with the fact that they are everything they profess to hate.
I suspect that people without a guiding set of core principles are more susceptible to this.
They stand for nothing and cling to normative political views spewed by MSM propaganda without thinking deeper into it. The programming is so effective that otherwise intelligent people turn their critical thinking off for certain political topics

So true, I've lost my high school friends in 2020. They have ostracize me as the anti vaxxer. And labeled me a conspiracy theorist.
Yep. I see it most places i go these days. So comfortable in the bubble of lies.
And this is where the death grip on our own egos prohibits us from growth.
Accept that you're wrong (it's a part of being human) and learn and grow from it.

This applies wider than people are willing to accept.
It's easy to see the others doing it than the self.
