The Sisters and Brothers (Nuns and Monks) used to refer to is as “the mortification of the flesh”. It is most usually associated with the Easter season, the Lenten abstinence from meat and sweets as a self-sacrifice leading up to the Easter feast and celebration of the resurrection. Self denial during the Advent season is less common but no less valid or valuable. Both seasons should be a time for the expression of charity as well. Charitable acts and the mortification of the flesh remind us of our duty to our brothers and sisters, our duty to our faith and the transitory nature of our lives.
