I have a family member in the hospital/hospice, and need to book a flight from SD to AZ.
would love to fly without a mask, but guessing that's not possible. hopefully I'm wrong/you guys have some suggestions.

It's not the airlines; it's the FAA. They all need to comply... Or rather, make you comply.
I fly very often; it drives me crazy when they make their obligatory announcement that it is a "federal law" to wear masks. I always shake my head at that. I have to fly for my business so I wear the mask below my nose because we weren't designed to breathe our own exhaust. Occasionally, a gate agent or flight attendant will tell me to pull the mask over my nose, which I do for a moment and then pull it back down. It seems that the effeminate "male" flight attendants are the most snooty about enforcing the masktard idiocy. No surprise there. I have noticed that more and more people are at least wearing the face diaper below the nose, and at best, just not wearing them, especially at baggage claim.
