Take a look at this map, there were buildings between WTC 1 and 2 and Building 7. Building 7 was across a road.

This is WTC 6, which was between the two towers and Building 7.

This is the aftermath. Keep in mind WTC 6 was demolished afterward and is no longer standing here. Notice the buildings next to Build 7's footprint are still upright without much damage. Notice the building to the left of the towers was closer than Building 7 and doesn't have much damage.
