The this lady In The story, her parents were the farmers. They had a bunch of land in what ended up being one of the fanciest parts of Orange County California. Her brother came back from ww2 and went to college with his gi bill. Learned business, the post ww2 boom happened they got lucky and the value of their land skyrocketed. Sold a bunch and then he took a plot and built a shopping center with the proceeds and then just kept developing. The family farm is still there in the middle of the properties.
