plus the law in UK accepts 'common law' when it comes to unmarried people co-habiting and if they split have to share everything 50-50 legally equal to married people. So they choose what they want too.
This is the common law of which they speak- they call it defunct but our entire legal system was built on it.

I think we use to have that Law at one time! The common law time for people living together was 7 years!
