Yeah, they're already doing this for new accounts. I tried to create one a few weeks ago to check on something and they wanted me to scan my driver's license, etc., to create an "ID.me" account. I closed the tab.
I was able to sign in to my husband's old account without any of that, but they gave me an alert that they'll soon be forcing everyone to switch to ID.me. It's such a joke. They pretend they're doing this to protect you. Meanwhile, they're behind in processing returns and refunds to the tune of tens of millions. I'm surprised they're not requiring a vaccine card to set up an account.
And as the top comment on the article points out, why is it okay to require jumping through all these hoops to see your tax history when requiring an ID to vote is somehow racist and the 2022 version of the slave trade?
When we started receiving child tax credit payments the only way to opt out was to sign up for ID.me. As much as I didn't want the payments to mess up my taxes, doing this was a bridge too far.

Thats racist! What about the marginalized people who cant even get an id to vote, much less provide a photo for facial recognition.
what account online?
Public radio was begging taxpayers to file electronically.
Fuck em. We are filing papers this year
