Does anyone think that the white hats will successfully defuse the situation in Ukraine before it could possibly lead to something worse?

I believe the situation involving Ukraine / Russia is already well under control. Each side is taking measured steps, but they are well aware of the boundaries.
Russia's congress will most likely declare two of the Ukraine territories as "Independent Territories" on February 14th. It wouldn't surprise me if Russia then sent in "humanitarian aid", advisors and military troops to help secure those territories and "keep the peace". The whole matter will end up at the U.N., where both Russia and China have veto power in the security council.
There will be a stalemate. Russia doesn't want the remainder of Ukraine and all of the headaches it would cause them. The West isn't going to go to war to prevent two territories (which have large ethnic Russian populations) from becoming independent. I think map boundaries will be re-drawn... and the world will keep spinning.
