I remember that - the Nostradamus quatrains. I had never even heard about Nostradamus until then. Lot of cable show 'documentaries' about it as well.

I think a lot of people forget the web was not as ubiquitous as it is now and social media as we know it wasn't even a term. Lot of stuff was shared via email. I remember getting the pictures of the people jumping from the WTC and just being horrified. That still haunts me.
