Tbh I thought it was a lot of theater. The judge seemed to me like a typical liberal judge. Sometimes these people tell a guy, "hey you're going to get a slap on the wrist and we all are going to pretend not to be happy about it." The judge talked about Jussie's rough upbringing because he's black (his father is Jewish though) and how that influenced his poor decisions. When the judge started listing the offenses you knew Jussie was not getting the prison time any objective person anywhere would think he deserved.
The lawyers and the judge made the very best case they could that he should not go to prison and had not done anything really serious, so that when the judge handed down his super-light sentence it would seem like it was done to appease us. But I guarantee when he gets out of jail (not prison) every celebrity will be talking about how he "made his mistakes but he did his time." and they will immediately pump him up as a star again. Because Hollywood takes care of their own. That's all that happened here.
Honestly, if I robbed a liquor store to feed my family, even if I used a fake gun and didn't hurt anyone, and stopped to help an old lady who had tripped on my way out, I would probably get 1-2 years for my first offense.
Ultimately Jussie's gay and black privilege here got him a pass for having a "tough upbringing", and he was given an ultra-light sentence for it. Imo his crime was as serious as murder, if not moreso.
