They lied because they needed Trump out of office. They needed Trump out of office so that they could go back to egging on Putin into starting WW3 (which started with the NATO-backed coup of Yanukovych in 2014. That coup is the reason we kept hearing "Russian collusion" and "Russian interference" non-stop for years. The US overthrew a pro-Russia head of state, so the establishment assumed Russia wanted payback for that.
