Nah Russia never actually gave up. Americans did the same thing we did with the election, claimed the race was over and declared themselves the Victor. I did a whole 12 page paper on the Soviet space race for my World History class senior year of high school.
The Soviets gave no fucks and sent a frickin dog and then a human into space with no return plan.
