When I was a kid I was in lovewith Julie Andrews' characters... Maria, Mary poppins, etc. When I say "love" , I just mean that I wanted to be close to her, just like the children she cared for. Her singing made me feel spiritual, although when I was young I didn't understand.
Watching those movies as a grown man is something special. What I noticed, too, about "The Sound of Music" was how prominent a role God played. It was refreshing to see prayer, and humility, and joy, and a sense of guilt... and it just got me thinking: someone needs to start producing quality musicals like that again.
Enough of the explosions, violence, sex, etc. I guarantee that if a wholesome musical hit the big screen it would be well-received by a public yearning for role models who themselves yearn for God's grace within the script.
Just my thoughts on the evening before Easter. Have a blessed day with Christ in your heart.
Quite a few revisions but most every time the reality is even better than the movie.
Their music director and promoter was not "Max" but their family priest.
When they fled, Maria had birthed two more kids, with her third born later.
Their vibrant Catholicism was even more solid than apparent in the movie, with the two worst theology songs (Confidence in Me and Something Good) being written specially for the movie against Maria's wishes.
And there was another whole book's worth of material available on how God provided for them as they settled in the mountains of Vermont and dedicated businesses and music to him (many descendants are alive today).
Thanks for notes! Happy Easter
Julie Andrew’s was my favorite actress growing up. “Mary Poppins” was the first movie I ever saw in a theatre, and the “Sound of Music” was my all time favorite film. I thank my parents for an upbringing that taught me about kindness, love, consideration and virtue. Movies like that also taught us those Godly values. It’s woven into the fibre of America. Don’t give up on America, Patriots. We are braver than we think.
Everything begins in the home. Thanks for sharing. Happy Easter
Happy Easter!
The Sound of Music is my favorite movie of all time. When I was a child it was the songs, but over time I continue to be inspired by its message of faith and perseverance. I agree there are many who hunger for this type of entertainment to return.
A blessed Easter to you and your family as well!
Thank you, same to you and yours.
One of my “go to’s” when I’m tired of the world. Great movie.
Now that is a list to make... go-to movies, or shows, or songs, or books, etc. that help us restore our hope in these challening times.
True story. When I was a young lad, my family travelled half way across the world by ocean liner (not a cruise, but a liner that was cheaper than air travel back then). We lived on the ship for 6+ weeks.
The ship (probably around 500+ passengers), had all sorts of things, including a cinema that play films around the clock. Everyone on board is a paid traveller, so there was no charge for the cinema. Consequently, me and my brothers went to the movies every afternoon for more than a month.
One of the films that played was Sound of Music. The same movie, day in, day out, for weeks on end. By the time we docked in Europe, I had watched Sound of Music at least 20 times. I knew the songs by heart and the dialog ... I could basically recite the entire film if I wanted to!
Watched it numerous times since then. Mostly for my kids. My memory is not as clear now, but it remains as a film I know back to front.
Such a very special memory. Thanks for sharing. Happy Easter
Belated Happy Easter!
Thank you, fren! I love that word, reverence!
: )
Happy Easter
Yes a great movie. Another one is THE FOURTH WISE MAN with Martin Sheen. Saw it when I was young, it touched my heart then; now I'm old seeing it now still fills my heart.
Thanks... I will have to check that out.
Are you, by chance, in the Omaha area? I am out in the tri-city area (GI, Hastings, Kearney)
Never knew this! Thanks, and happy Easter
Indeed. Sand Pebbles is excellent. Second favorite Steve McQueen film behind The Great Escape.
