U2 should have broken up after Achtung Baby. They've had some good songs since, but they are now more of a masonic road show than a band. Count how many times they've been on the cover of "Rolling Stone". They have been made relevant in perpetuity by Satan. I remember when they pretended to be Christian...
Agreed. Was a “superfan” in the 80s/90s. Still love the older stuff. I occasionally wonder when U2 was “gotten to”. A lot of symbolism in those ZOO TV shows…
For awhile they were the biggest band on the planet. Many pictures of Bono doing the old “one eye” thing. I’d like to think they still had their humanity during the Joshua Tree years. That album is a such a huge part of my youth. I think that by Achtung they made their deal at the crossroads.
They certainly have never done much in terms of playing - and it's not that keeping it simple can't be done far better/musically (Stones, AC/DC just two great examples of this). Their drummer is worse than Ringo FFS. Just blech.

I think U2 would have given anything to be famous.
anything.
I think they wanted to be famous more than they wanted to be musicians. IIRC they said something to that effect in a documentary.

And Achtung Baby was them trying to be Depeche Mode, which DM was of course rather better at (also at the time...now...same)....
“To claim the victory Jesus won” -U2, Sunday Bloody Sunday.
What a hypocrite. "Charlie Manson stole this and we're taking it back".
