He did say he would do this.
Strategically, it also works. It shows that he's not here to be one sided, he believes in personal liberties regardless for which side's agenda that inconveniences on any given day.
Since he's taking on a major social media platform, he needs to show that the only side he's on is freedom, and no one has to like the decisions he makes in favor of one side or the other.

He does what he wants and that does not always fall perfectly into everyone's box of what a white hat or even a black hat box. We are all humans with different opinions, calling him a bad person because he won't follow what you want is just like the snowflakes.

I don't agree with him, but his opinion does not automatically make him a black hat. My Mom was a serious conservative, and many wanted her to run for office. She was a supporter of abortion being legal, but not used as a form of birth control.
When I was 10 my Mom used a clothes hanger and almost bleed out in the bath tub. She had been advised not to have any more children as it could cause a rupture of some kind and the CLOWN living with us against her will forced her to get pregnant. He found out she was serious as she almost died. He then got a vasectomy, before the police finally took him away.
