I just looked up Van Hollen's challenger's website. If you can get past the sophomoric writing style she's a pretty boilerplate Dem policy-wise, except for two notable items that are actually listed separately from the rest of her platform. One, she is big on transparency (actually was recognized for clearing FOIA requests in her role at USAID). Two, she is big on...big women. I'll leave her campaign page here where you can read more about the Thick Women Initiative: https://www.michellesmithforsenate.org/
On the outside chance Van Hollen's stroke was an excuse for him to exit stage Gitmo, I thought his challenger might be even further left. I guess sometimes a clot shot stroke is just a clot shot stroke.
He is up for re-election this year. He has a primary challenger, a woman I've never heard of, and other than John Here to Help fellow the Republicans running are all practically anonymous. https://www.elections.maryland.gov/elections/2022/primary_candidates/gen_cand_lists_2022_4.html
