The Original Great Awakening was about bringing conversion to Christ as He is, and not just a simple moral lifestyle- Even 'Christian' ministers could be unconverted, as Gilbert Tennent both suggested and warned about. His sermon, The Dangers of an Unconverted Ministry, caused many to question the practice of the Church in hiring moralists who were not converted. https://college.cengage.com/history/ayers_primary_sources/danger_unconverted_ministry.htm
Religious Leaders had, wanting to increase Church attendance, removed the criteria of conversion to a personal relationship with Jesus for membership. Not only did most members have no relationship with Christ through conversion, but often the pastors didn't either. This paved the way for the 'tyranny of the Moralists, whom Johnathan Edwards referred to as 'the River Gods'.
Johnathan Edwards, one of the American Great Awakening preachers, spoke boldly against the 'Half-way Covenant' , and taught on justification through faith alone, as well as a changed life: (John 4) True Revival and a work of the Spirit in a Person Involved: Acknowledging who Jesus was- The son of the Living God, The Savior From Our Sin
