This isn't a sign that Russia is winning, it is merely a sign that Putin is in an unwinnable situation.
NATO has grown vastly stronger as a result of this stupid war.
Russia's army has not only grown weaker but has been shown to have always been poorly managed and corrupt.
Russia cannot achieve their goal of ending Ukrainian independence and the Ukrainian urge to leave the yoke of the former USSR. But Ukraine cannot push Russia totally out of their territory because Russia is perfectly willing to let thousands die... it is their strategy in every war for hundreds of years... have far more men than your foe and don't give a fuck if they die.
Putin is lucky that your average Russian is used to men dying young for stupid causes.
Let us revisit this later, when, at best, Russia has gained a marginal amount of territory in East Ukraine. Those areas will also be a complete ruin, thousands of Russians will be dead and NATO's strength and unity will be stronger than ever.
And, again, that is a best case for Russia at this point.
Also, we should be rejoicing at Russia's complete and utter failure. Putin is a communist, he has NEVER tried to hide it, he constantly laments at the collapse of the USSR, he is also as corrupt and money grubbing as a lead could be. I am not saying that the Ukraine does not have a corruption problem, but Russia is the king (or Tsar if you will) of corruption.
I'm not sure what war you've been watching but it looks to me like Putin didn't even commit his main forces. Most of the troops were from Chechnya, which is pretty remarkable, considering Russia was at war with Chechnya not long ago. It's also brilliant strategy.

Someone has guzzled down the main stream narrative

Chechen soldiers are there, but not even Russia is claiming they amount to more than a small percent.
Also, fuck anyone who employs Islamic terrorists as mercenaries.
