You should be asking, "QRD?" as in "Quick Run Down?" for a quick explanation on what's going on. Additionally you can use, "OOTL here so what's going on?" as in "Out Of The Loop" but QRD is probably better used here.
"ELI5" is for when there's a lengthy explanation on something and it's complicated, like reading an End-User License Agreement (EULA), so you wanted it to be explained to you as if you're 5 years old a.k.a. "dumbing down the language".
