I think this is BS because of what they are saying about manipulating the salt to get the hash they want. That is not how it works.

A hash is a one way function (i.e it does not work backwards)
The same input to a hash function will always give the same output
The "salt" is just some extra random characters that get added to the input prior to hashing (either static characters or dynamically based on some input)
The reason you use a salt is so that hashing your password on site A gives a different value than hashing that same password on site B.
There are large lookup tables called rainbow tables that have pre-calculated "saltless" hashes of millions of values. If you don't use salting then you can easily find values in these tables to find the original password.
Having direct control over the salt value used, does not give you ANY advantage whatsoever in determining the final output of the hash (except for the case of choosing to not use a salt, but that did not happen in this case)
The salt is applied BEFORE hashing, therefore you would still have to brute force it.
