I like the story of the SR-71 guys outrunning missiles fired at them (over Libya IIRC) and not realizing they were over temp inadvertently and went faster than they ever had....
That was a crazy plane. It pissed out fuel when they filled it up because it had to get up to temperature in order for the metal to expand and create a seal.
Seal it from the start and it would rupture once it got up to temp.
Yup, it was wild for sure. Despite some big inaccuracies (repeat claims that the F-104 was the most maneuverable fighter ever = wut for example) this book is pretty interesting if you haven't heard of it:
I've been on a commercial jet that was coasting along at 650mph, so I guess there's no reason not to be stepping on the gas if it's within tolerance.
Don't forget, 100% has a built in safety margin, otherwise you couldn't push it beyond without it instantly exploding :)
