Yup, ATC error can cause this sort of thing (super busy and new or just spaced out something), so can pilot not heeding an ATC voiced command for maintaining a specific alt/speed/direction. Each plane is directed to a heading altitude n speed depending on those things, some planes are faster than others ATC a very stressful job because you have to be on watch and make quick calls whenever something changes (weather , new craft clocks into your airspace and emergencies included) None of that means anything if the pilot suddenly passed out without warning though, all the radar peeps would see was the blip going off course and they would radio in telling them to correct course and if no response they would do the same for any other plane they may get close to and use special call signs that let everyone know something is wrong. and so on and so on. Since one plane was landing, if it was the actual airstrip then the Tower would of been directing them (eyes on) Why da hell another small plane was allowed to be in that airspace at that time is a big WTF though. Was it taking off? was it crossing the airspace? were the two planes dogfighting? srsly.
Makes me think of the private jet that golfer Payne Stewart was in when sudden depressurization occurred and they were all killed instantly and ATC had to clear airspace and wait for the jet to run out of fuel and crash.
Yeah, scary shit like that happens more than one would think. Even if you were not killed instantly from that, you would be oxy deprived/confused and pass out and freeze (depending on altitude). I do know of one pilot that managed to land a jet like that, he was literally frozen to the flight stick, they had to pry his hand loose and him out of cockpit, co pilot passed out pretty quickly. Do not know how the pilot not only managed to stay conscious but, was able to hold it together flying blind (instruments all frozen so no readings) just the ATC voice telling him what to do all the way in but, that pilot is the kinda guy you want flying any aircraft, tell ya that is for 100. lol
even if it was atc error...the pilot cant see another plane?...they dont have radars? imagine running into another car in wide open space where you can swerve any direction and clear it....weird
