Here's the issue: We cannot, as a society, sacrifice our collective standard of living for whatever "crisis", whether real or not, appears.

Whether it's aliens, interdimensional reptilians, climate change, or the sun exploding, it dosen't matter. People will grow fatigued, consider if their sacrifice is worth it, become defeatist, or enter a myriad of other self destructive behaviors.
