Turns out relying on getting your Gas from a Country that makes no secret of not being particularly fond of the rest of Europe is a bad idea. Who’d a figured that one?
Take that, Putin! That'll teach you!
You can't just re-start coal burning power plants easily. If the power plant has been shut down for more than 5-years... it's extremely costly and time consuming to bring it back online. When a coal plant has been shut down for 10-years, it takes nearly the same time, effort and cost as a new power plant would cost.
In the best of times, you could restart an older mothballed plant within 3-6 months. These days, with parts not available, electronics no longer easily available... it may take 6-months to a year to bring all of the old coal burning power plants on line at full capacity.
Maybe they will be on line in time for the coming mini ice age due to the solar minimum.
Well, apparently France can restart their coal fired plants for THIS winter…

I seem to recall reading the French rather then wholesale shut them down. Planned on keeping a Maintenance Crew/Skeleton crew on staff at the plants for a few years to ensure the plants could be brought back online relatively quickly in the case of emergency.
...and who is going to supply the coal ?
Germany has coal mines.
Probably import it. Which should spell great news for West Virginia.
Convert all those American bioweapon labs in Ukraine into coal fired power plants.
I sold them our 'carbon credits'. _____ Joe Manchin
lol
Gee, now how did Trump predict that?
They buy coal from Russia...
We have to do it now, because we only have a handful of power plants which can be cold startet. Once power were off, no additional coal power plants could be brought into operation. Where to get the coal from is another question.
Except for hydro power.
We don´t have noteworthy hydro power in Germany.
If there is any at all, it can be used for cold starting other types of power plants. Are there any oil-fired power plants there?
As far as I know they were all abolished a long time ago as well as our coal mines. We had nuclear power and cheap Russian LNG! When we are going to lose the grid, there´s no chance of starting the power plants as quick as it would be necessary. We´re dependent on the highly integrated European grid. A grid failure in Portugal can in the worst case shut down power in all of Europe. France´s nuclear power plants (they rely strongly on them) are old and due to replacement at least maintenance. Germany in her green hubris purchased from them and the dirty coal power plants in Poland and the Czech Republic when there was no sun nor wind. Additionally we literally don´t have gas stations with emergency generators. Even the police are dependent on commercial gas stations. Concerning our "military" I don´t know.
