I can second that assessment OP. It's astonishing for those who've never experienced it. What always struck me the most was how little corporations operate as a meritocracy, but instead end up becoming a kakistocracy over time!
If I had a nickel for every time I contemplated how this Director/VP got his/her job I'd be a rich man. Now granted, there were some worthy ones along the way. But the latter were always outnumbered by the former in my 25+ year experience enmeshed in the land of talking corpses (Corp-Orations).
I’ve worked at a large bank for 10 years now and lately I’ve been seriously thinking about quitting. Half of me feels stupid for wanting to quit after I spent so much time working my way up. The other half of me feels like life could be short and I don’t want to spend precious time doing something I hate. Decisions, decisions
Yes I agree with this. Luckily I work at a company now where they don't force it on us but the emails constantly roll in for talks and meetings on diversity, equity, women in the workforce, ect. There are many employees at the very top where that is all they do, Hold meetings and talks where there is no gain from this. Literally nothing but pointless talking.
Society has really gotten to a point where there are too many made up jobs. Pointless jobs and while that is beneficial in the aspect of having people work and make a living it seems as though more and more younger people gravitate to these pointless jobs and we see industries where we need workers struggling to hire.
It's gotten to the point where everything requires a meeting that goes nowhere and everything gets done but the job. It's ok to be completely useless as long as it's politically correct.
Exactly! What kills me is when a company requires it. I'm over here just wanting to do my job. Part of the reason I got a new job because my last one didn't like the fact that I refused to participate in wasting my time. 🙃
Oh God I worked for a company that had a raging leftist as a CEO. Complete with Obama quotes and BLM signs OUTSIDE at the client entry! I shot out of there as soon as possible because her management style was absolute shit, and she would whine about specific employees in company-wide meetings. Never work for a leftist, boys and girls.

Never again!

Human beings in general.
Suboptimal.

Practical Rules of Bureaucracy
This is a great tragicomic essay.

The biggest revelation is discovering how genuinely unintelligent many of the people are working at blue chip companies.
Multi-billion dollar companies, and you have absolute midwits in middle and senior management.
It’s almost like humans have such vulnerability towards power & integrity.
