This includes food production, energy, social media, or just anything outside of the corporate structure. This is how a lot of towns in the U.S. were left almost unscathed by the Great Depression, because they had their own means of providing jobs and food for everyone... And that was California! Notice it was immune to the 1929 crash and dust bowl because they never listened to anything the federal government said. This is what caused a great migration west that lasted for decades. We pretty much need a 1930s California, and right now it's looking like the American South and Midwest is just that.
