My function was to save our Country and Survive.

Sounds like he knew they would try to kill him his entire time in office. He had better protection than JFK while in office.

Thats exactly what I took from it. Why would you only read the first part and not the second? He wasn't saying he was making the country survive, he was saying HE was trying to survive.
